Austria's ice cool Nativity scene
November 29th 2009 22:15
Nov. 29 - The Austrian city of Graz celebrates the unveiling of its world-famous Nativity scene made entirely out of ice.
A team of some dozen ice sculptors and specialist technicians has been working on the Nativity scene for days, carving the giant ice blocks by hand inside a historic courtyard in the city centre.
Although ice sculpture has increased in popularity around the world, it remains a niche for artists due to the volatility of the raw material. The most impressive sculptures are made with clear, transparent ice that has no impurities or cracks, a result achieved by slow freezing by machines in huge vats.
