So what if you're poor, work hard and you'll escape poverty, what even when you're one years old?
February 18th 2008 22:36
Neuroscientists have found that “many children growing up in very poor families with low social status experience unhealthy levels of stress hormones, which impair their neural development.”
The effect is to impair language development and memory — and hence the ability to escape poverty — for the rest of the child’s life.
So now the question arises as to what the US is doing to fight poverty.
"Suffer the little children to come unto me" Jesus said, and surely no other religion would disagree.
The US seems to do very well on success stories and the greed of excessive wealth and the pursuit of such "high ideals" but how do they overlook the damage of child poverty.
Blame the Victim? If you're poor it's your own fault? But don't worry we have bigger, fatter richer moguls who are working on inferior food products to make them lots and lots of money, and feed the inferior masses with their inferior products and then we'll give you all a free computer which will fix all of your inferior brains.
Hollywood style thinking, at its worst.
Prof [Jack] Shonkoff says excessive levels of these childhood stress hormones disrupt the formation of synaptic connections between cells in the developing brain - and even affect its blood supply. ‘They literally disrupt the brain architecture,’ he said.”
It's not a pretty thought, is it?

Sarah, I guess the same is true in responses to your comment.
They've been promising to do something about poverty for so many years now, they do no appear to have done anything much, very low wages for such people while the greedy pick up SO much, does not help the situation and with certain parents money meant for children gets diverted elsewhere for the benefit of the parent, if you can call druggin, boozing and smoking benefits.
It's an awful problem but in no way excused by paying such poor wages to people.
US is well behind UK on all of this.
