A daily cup of coffee or other caffeinated beverage may offer some protection against Alzheimer's disease and other forms of memory loss later in life.
A study using lab rabbits at the University of North Dakota finds caffeine, the equivalent to one cup of coffee a day, may block the disruptive effects of a high cholesterol diet on the brain.
Previous research has shown that high cholesterol levels can break down the blood brain barrier, leaving the brain exposed to contaminants.
After three months on caffeine and a cholesterol laden diet the blood brain barrier in the rabbits was significantly more intact than rabbits that did not get the caffeine.
