Study in browns
Fuente de Piedra, Spain, July 14, 2007—Photograph by Jon Nazca/Reuters
They're not quite ready to think pink, but these young greater flamingos are about to get decked out with "stylish" new rings.
Hundreds of flightless flamingo chicks, including the group seen here on July 14, are rounded up to be tagged and measured each year at the Fuente de Piedra nature reserve near Málaga in southern Spain. The park's lagoon hosts Europe's second largest flamingo population.
Although flamingos are not generally migratory, the birds of Fuente de Piedra follow the rise and ebb of water levels in the shallow lagoon. The majority arrive in early February to breed and stay through early September, when water levels are lowest. Tagging the birds will help researchers monitor where they go during the fall months.
