Mind vs Brain an initial discussion

attached below is an extract from scholarly material produced by the author of the attached link.

Mind vs Brain

I have made it easy by reproducing the introductory material for anyone who is interested.

A quick scan should suffice for those who are only minimally interested or even disinterested as the principal point is to distinguish between mind and brain functions and to draw attention to the many factors which impact on the brain - e,g, hormones which factors are often overlooked.

I am still seeking some topical debate on this matter and the best available current model but that may take a considerable amount of time.

The material I have reproduced is not threatening and contains few words that are unfamiliar.

Happy reading and for those more interested the link provides more substance.

Brain and Mind: Fact and Fantasy is a graduate seminar covering often controversial issues regarding the relationship between the physical brain and the mental processes that make up the mind—i.e., The Mind-Brain Problem. This course will generally be concerned with, among other things: the psychobiology of perception and consciousness, emotion and reason, intelligence and language, learning and memory—all of which represent aspects of human information processing. Long-standing and interesting scientific questions, many of which we shall address in this seminar, are: What are the roles of genetic and environmental factors in determining the structure and function (anatomy and physiology) of brain, mind, and consciousness—The Nature-Nurture Problem? What are the roles of hormones? What are the developmental influences? What has been the evolution of brain, mind, and consciousness? What do we know about animal minds and consciousness? How does the brain-body generate a "self"? What is the nature of the "I" inside our heads? How are emotion and reason

related? How do we make decisions and deceive ourselves—Free Will vs. Determinism? What are the nature and mechanisms of altered states of consciousness associated with drugs, meditation, sleep, dreaming, and hypnosis? What are the functions of consciousness? Where is God in the brain? Much of our understanding and theorizing about brain-and-mind comes from fascinating studies we shall read about involving neurological patients with, e.g., phantom limbs, neglect syndrome, blindsight, and Capgras’s Syndrome (a disorder in which friends and loved ones are seen as being imposters). For more descriptions, see the book jackets, prefaces, forwards, and introductions.
Student-Learning Outcome Objectives
Objectives of this course are that as a result of careful study and fulfillment of the course assignments, students should be able (among other things) to:
1. Describe how neuroscientists go about investigating the brain, mind, and consciousness;
2. Describe the major elements of the nervous and endocrine systems, as well as some of the circuits and interactions both within and between these systems;
3. Describe the major functions of the elements of the nervous and endocrine systems with respect to behavior and experience (the mental trilogy of cognition, emotion, and motivation), and explain how these functions are carried out;
4. Describe the roles and interactions of genetic and environmental factors in determining the structure and function of the nervous and endocrine systems, and thereby the nature of mind and consciousness;
5. Describe the apparent relationships between brain structures and activities on the one hand, and aspects of the mind (e.g., consciousness and the sense of self);
6. Describe how all human behavior, thought, and feelings are the end result of complex patterns of nervous and endocrine system activity;
7. Describe the causes of some major diseases and disorders of the nervous and endocrine systems, and what can be done to treat them;
8. Describe how emotion and reason are related;
9. Describe the mechanisms of decision-making and altered states of consciousness such as dreaming and hallucinations;
10. Describe where God might be in the brain.

It's interesting that today I see the signature tune reproduced in the brain puzzler. Is that intentional?

Adele,

No, not usual at all. It was not my intent and I can barely make out what you could possibly be referring to?

So, I am learning too!

I take it you mean to-day's signature tune, in to-day's puzzler.

AndI I guess you do not mean entirely literally.

Nice to have you visit and good to have your views.

Bryn,

I'm sorry you're confused - what big fangs you have!

For starters, as that seems to be what others do, just look at the art and see whether you like it or not.

The Computer art is the medium, not the end, you'll find references to the mind, brain, MS Paint, seniors, brain health, exercises for the brain, keeping neural sprouts going to create new connections to cicumvent blocked of deficient ones, improving and maintaining the memory and nutrition for the brain etc, etc, and so forth.

You'll find nightmares, just look at the post headings to pick one up, dreamscape, dreams and nightmares, abstracts.

You've come into the exercise a little late.

Just give your mind free reign and see what it tells you, especially with the puzzler, it's meant to be a process that evolves.

Sorry about the confusion, but that's good, it gets the mind going and that encourages the neural connections to grow and mind efficiency increases. I'm targetting the elderly for some things but when it comes to the brain and the
mind and health I target everyone.

Thanks for your visit, continue to at least have a look at some regularly and you'll get the idea, most haven't got it as yet, but everyone is entitled to their view to have a go and say what they think and if you'r interested in the brain, mind, computers it will be all there.

If you like you can have a look at some introductory posts to get a better idea. some under katyzzz and some under conversation in the family.

Thanks for coming over, you present a very dark image, no doubt by design.

I'll follow up the recommended reading from that PDF link.

Sounds like an interesting course -- thanks mentioning it.
