So, what's the brainstem, then?
September 20th 2009 07:40
The brain stem (aka the hindbrain ) connects the spinal cord to the brain.
It consists of three parts the midbrain, the pons and the medulla oblongata, often conveniently abbreviated to the medulla.
It regulates systems related to basic survival such as breathing, circulation, blinking, digestion, etc
I have included several small pictures which are colour coded and show clearly the three regions of the brain stem.
The brain stem plays a vital role in basic attention, arousal, and consciousness. All information to and from our body passes through the brain stem on the way to or from the brain.
A stroke affecting the brain stem is potentially life threatening since this area of the brain controls functions such as breathing and instructing the heart to beat. Brain stem stroke may also cause double vision, nausea and loss of coordination.
Just to give you an idea of what some of these things that are mentioned in the posts are clear to you.
And here's a little cartoon video which you may like to see, compliments of utube.
