Brain signals - no, I haven't forgotten.
June 27th 2007 04:03
Information on the brain is coming before us almost daily, but it's sorting the wood from the trees [metaphorically speaking] that can become the issue.
This post focuses on a few points of interest and no doubt different readers will find different things of interest to themselves and their own situations.
There are some surprises as well as facts you may have encountered before, there's also a quick little brain quiz with answers which you may find surprising. Don't worry, it's easy, but you'll probably wonder at some of the answers. But, they ARE correct. I scored 100% and that is not surprising. You should not expect to achieve that score, ideas keep changing and there are some misconceptions in the community generally.
Child's cognitive functions
From JAMA we learn that "researchers found that children from families of different incomes did not differ on many measures of basic cognitive functions, such as memory"

Chewing Gum Improves Memory
Sylvia Hubbard

She says
"Lousy memory? A university study shows that you can improve your memory simply by chewing gum, says renowned health expert Dr. Susan Lark.
The study took 75 adults and divided them into three groups, then administered a 20-minute memory test. The first group chewed gum during the test, the second group simulated chewing with nothing in their mouths, while the third group took the test without chewing at all.
The gum-chewers scored 24 percent higher on immediate word recall, and 36 percent higher on delayed word recall. The researchers aren't sure, however, how the chewing gum does its trick.
Some believe chewing gum raises the activity level in an area of the brain called the hippocampus, which is an area thought to be important for memory. MRI studies do, in fact, show that the hippocampus lights up when people chew.
Others have a simpler theory – past studies have demonstrated that chewing gum makes the heart beat faster, which increases blood flow and delivers more oxygen to the brain.
What kind of gum sharpens memory the best? Apparently any kind will do, but perhaps it's prudent to stay away from gum sweetened with sugar, or with questionable chemicals. Some experts believe that xylitol-sweetened gum is best, since it doesn't raise your blood sugar, and may even be good for your teeth and gums"

Chewing gum? I've never heard that before. I should buy myself a pack of Dentyne and turn on the brain power!

Yes, chew away, there's a recommendation there for a specific type of gum.
Really pleased you tuned into this one, these things are probably the main reason I'm here, but one needs to appeal to a variety of readers to meet one's objectives.
