Smart ways to keep your brain sharp and dementia at Bay (1)

Brain sharp

EXERCISE

•Exercise increases the activity in the frontal lobe of the brain, Dr. Stewart says. "You get the runner's high; that's endorphins, your own narcotics in your body. People get addicted; it's the body's reward system for exercise."

•Additionally, the motor system sends a signal that increases the amount of a hormone called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. "It's like brain fertilizer, or Miracle-Gro, for memory cells," Dr. Stewart says.

•"Research is being done – it has been documented in rats and will soon be in people – that shows physical exercise may be important in helping prevent Parkinson's disease dementia as well as Alzheimer's," says Dr. Stewart, who works with patients with both diseases. "I tell everybody they need to become a jock."

SO YOU SHOULD: Do a combination of stretching, aerobic and muscle-strengthening routines. One suggestion: Mix it up. Alternate cardio- and strength-training days for a full-body workout.

Great tips as always, katyzzz. It's true re. the endorphins -- i used to be addicted to working-out hard...

I really like this post, this is an interesting topic for me and you might actually be able to help me on this.
I was big for years, and scarily smart, top of the class. Mid 2004 I decided to actively exercise, shape myself rather than just be a blob. I discovered the exercise high and theres nothing like it - except the ciggi after a nice hard work out!(couldnt resist*grin*)

BUT now that I am a jock, I work hard all day then do even more at home, I have no time for the mental exercise and seem to be losing my smarts and my vocabulary. So, what Ive been thinking lately is - you get brawn, you lose your brains, one way or the other.

Is exercise really good for your brain?

Now, Kleo,

It’s great to have you here, get off those rotten fags, I’m sure there’s more than one post of mine here on it.

Exercise really is good for the brain. The worst possible thing is cigs, just think what they are doing with your blood vessels, everywhere.

You probably do need some mental exercises, spoken of here many times but there is another one coming. (i.e. post).

Try Lumosity, you can get a free trial here, for two weeks, no credit card needed, I have a yearly subscription taken up after I’d had my absolutely no obligation free trial, I do not get a commission.

You are stressed, bad for the brain, you may have coffee and some dark chocolate.

You do not sleep well ? Bad for the brain.

I think you are overworked, not good for anything.

Do crosswords, soduko and go about your daily chores in different and creative ways.

Socialise, talk to those around you, read out loud. Talk to your animals, I know where you’re coming from, when you stop talking you do lose the ability, I speak to my visiting birds and often find it hard to find the right word in conversation, simply because I wasn’t doing it much, talk to everyone, everwhere, a little at a time, friends, neighbours, bus drivers, check out chics, work associates, try to start using your brain more in your daily activities, do some study, open learning if that is the only solution.

Mental stimulation can be hard to find at an appropriate level, somehow you need to invent something to help fill those gaps. It is a matter of ‘use it or lose it’

Here endeth the first lesson. Come to grips with your medical problems, seek help.

Darling I’ve put myself out a lot to help you, now you must take some of those steps yourself.

Come and have a joke with me anytime.

Katyzzz....
just for the record - I always appreciate it when someone puts themself out for me, and I am seeking help for my medical problems. We'll see where that goes.

Its funny you say to talk more - there are people out there that want to strangle you right now! I dont stop talking - ever, and Im always trying to slip in book or movie quotes....My own little brain game.

I dont get into sudoku or crossword. Dont know why.

I know exercise really is good for the brain...But Im glad you acknowledge taking time for physical fitness does take away from brain power time!

And I dont smoke that much. Cant afford it.

And yep, overworked is right. Workin on changes constantly my friend, dont you worry.....

Kleo, introduce me to those people, they sound like fun, incidentally my neck is not available.

I wonder why they would want to strangle me?

The truth hurts perhaps?

I didn't think such people read my posts. I'll be looking forward to the increase in my stats, not so much work required then.

Where's their backbone?

I find all this deliciously intriguing.

I didn't realize you did such a lot of talking, so now do it less, try some maths, incidentally I don't read all that much, e.g. books but I am always reading, I don't do soduko, but it is recommended.

Perhaps all these people should try doing some of my computer art, that's why it's there, not for any consideration of artistic merit.

Other recommendations still stand.

Glad to see and hear you come back. Learn bits and pieces if you have not the time to say learn an instrument or a new language.

I'm glad you're working on yourself, I have always admired your dedication, but too much work is not good for anyone.

Looking forward to hearing from your neck ringing companions, some new visitors will brighten me up no end.

Still luvs ya darlin' but not unconditionally, I do not believe in unconditional love, that's fantasy stuff.

Come to think of it there's a few people I'd like to push off the globe myself but they just hang about and come back on the next revolution of the big globe.

As Tracy would say, Bye.
