So what's YOUR brain made of?

December 29th 2007 20:13
Human brain
Signature Tune

Let's just hope it doesn't look like this, shall we?

Brain
Green goo

Blog of the day, so called, discusses the 5 senses and how they work on the brain.

These senses are sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste.. These are used by the brain for attention, memory, learning, recall and speech, employing its 10 billion neurons and its 40 billion connections per cubic centimeter.

Those are very big numbers, remember they are in cubic cms, i.e. in a volume of 1x1x1 cm, giving a cm cubed. There are lots of those in one brain and therefore enormous numbers of neural connections.

The brain contains our memory and is not restricted to just one area of the brain.

It allows us to pay attention, remember, process, calculate and learn, not just simple things like preparing our food but complex things like learning an instrument, which takes years.

Man can speak making him unique amongst animals, thanks to his larynx and vocal cords.

Chimps cannot speak but can be taught to communicate through a sign language. Some apes (chimps, bonobos, gorillas or orangutans) were able to use 1,000 signs and understand 3,000 words in English. But they cannot use grammar or sophisticated constructions for expressing sophisticated ideas.

All of this takes place in the brain which must be suitably constructed, similar in appearance to the green goo but fortunately not made of it.

So just what is our brain made of? I'll let you know in another post, it just may encourage you to take care of it, that's if you do not already do so.

So, if you're not walking regularly, for those of us who are not so physical in our jobs, do start, it's the easiest and the best thing you can do.

. . . and then there's the whole sixth sense thing to boot.

Given just how little of our brain we apparently use (a curious conumdrum really - the brain exploring itself) - the potential for discovery and expansion is exciting.

Thought provoking - though I had to laugh - given some chimps actually have a better grasp of communication than some teenagers.

Cheers

Geez, I sure hope mine is not made of green goo, but it does feel like your signature tune, sometimes. Good one, katyzzz

Interesting entry! I recommend reading "Emerging Mind," by V.S Ramachandran, it discusses all matters with the brain.

How do I save myself? I just realized my life, life style, eating habits and caffeine consumption is not conducive to a healthy brain katyzzz, should I just roll over and kiss my behind goodbye or will I even remember why I was bent over? Raven

Besides walking and feeding yourself properly, you can help the brain by doing puzzles such as crosswords, sudoku, all those things that appear in the daily paper. Any other kinds of lateral thinking approach is good for the brain.

I've received so many great comments here it makes me loathe to comment, I don't want to destroy the effects and it is apparent that some have NOT been visiting my posts.

And I'm sure we'll all be amazed at Raven's claims that he has his own freshly prepared rump steak, the ultimate self preservation accompanied with nihilation, just as well he has never give me any reassurance that he has such contortionist and cannibalistic tendencies, so I think we need not worry too much about Raven, BUT, Raven, where have you been during the coffee benefits for the brain posts.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Others, keep working on it, you need to extend your views, stretch the brain much as you would stretch your legs.

Thanks for your wonderful replies, I've been a little tardy, or a little behind, as Raven would express it.
