Mental decline rises : how Brain Fitness can help.
January 30th 2008 20:47
An amusingly illustrated short article comes from an unusual source.
Care Station makes the following recommendations which have been made many times on this blog.
While differing to some insignificant degree it repeats what we are told about the brain constantly.
So just as a condensed refresher I am repeating their recommendations here.
Regular mental activity that is varied and challenging is the key. And you don’t need fancy software or video games to do it. Simple activities like crossword puzzles, Sudoku, or learning a new hobby, have been proven to keep you mentally fit longer and better.
Diet – Stick to fruits, vegetables, dairy and unprocessed grains, as well as meat or vegan alternatives. Eat fish, which contains omega 3 fatty acid, a key component for healthy cognitive function. Make sugary sweets rare, and for caffeine, try green or black tea instead. There are some bad foods that are actually good for you – like dark chocolate and red wine.
Sleep – The mind should rest between 7-8 hours each night to repair damaged cells in the body and improve memory.
Stress – It happens to the best of us. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be under control. Be sure to plan ahead for all your projects, take a break from stress every hour. Breathe deeply and slowly to bring your heart back to a steady and calm pulse. If stress is recurring or frequent, consider what it is that makes you unhappy in your environment.
Quite brief but none the less reasonably sound.
So what are you doing to stimulate and maintain your brain health?
