Brain Health Across the USA
September 26th 2011 20:11
As America gets older, brain health -- that barometer of how just how fit our brains remain as we age -- has become one of the country's top health concerns. Last week, nutritional product company Life's DHA and the National Center for Creative Aging released the Brain Health Index, a ranking of American states (including the District of Columbia) by brain health.
States were measured for diet and nutrition, mental health, physical health and social well-being. Maryland came away with top honors, followed by the District of Columbia. New York was 17th on the list. Southern states brought up the rear with Louisiana and Mississippi in second-last and last place respectively.
As an example just look at these stats on Maryland
Strengths
High consumption of fish rich in DHA
High consumption of DHA-fortified foods and supplements
Low incidence of Alzheimer's disease-related deaths
Challenges
Relatively low level of religious or spiritual activities
Relatively high rate of diabetes/gestational diabetes
