Travel Games for Dummies

For Nintendo DS

Thursday morning, I stuck “Travel Games for Dummies” into the DS and played around while I waited for the barber.

I found really easy-to-play versions of Solitaire, Sudoku and Crosswords. There are a lot of different ways to play, and there's a pretty robust Sudoku training mode. I also liked how Crosswords would become more difficult as you got better at solving the puzzles.

True story: I was having so much fun that I let someone jump ahead of me in line to get a haircut (but I wish I'd known he planned on getting a shave and a mud treatment, too).

Brain Training for Dummies

For PC

“Brain Training for Dummies” promises to “sharpen your intellect with brain-building games.” It's basically a set of puzzles that test you in math, language, spatial skills, logic, reflexes and memory.

So if you have a kid who is constantly wanting to play videogames, this is a good one to give him. It's fun to play, and will challenge and teach him something at the same time.

Players go at their own pace, and there are plenty of interactive tutorials to help you if you get stuck. The multiple difficulty levels should ensure that players of all ages find appropriate challenges.

Poker for Dummies

For PC

I don't know how to play poker, so I was interested to try this game. The tutorial explained the basics in simple-to-learn terms. I am not ready to go to Vegas and risk my paycheck, but I do know the difference now between Texas Hold 'Em and Seven Card Stud.

In addition to the tutorial, there's a practice mode with a coach who will help you learn the game and give you advice during matches against the computer. You can even “cheat” by using the “odds calculator.” The game is very fun when playing against the five virtual opponents, but it'd be nice if there was an online component so you could play against human opponents.

Hey katyzzz I have three game lovers, and each one can beat the socks off me at any game they have, this one may just be the best for kids.
