Neuro Active Bicycle Helps Exercise Kids' Brains
WELLINGTON, Fla. -- Some Wellington elementary school students not only exercise their minds in class, but their bodies, too.
Teachers said a new piece of equipment is making a big difference in the classroom.
Reading, writing and arithmetic can all be found in a typical day in Kim Murray's classroom at Panther Run Elementary School in Wellington. But some students also take advantage of the Neuro Active Bike.
"As I tell my kids, you don't have arms or legs coming out of your brain, so you've got to find activities that can help strengthen it," said physical education coach C.J. Cain.
He said the children call it a "brain bike."
"It's a good thing to come over here, because it helps you and I want to get strong muscles," said student Kelcee McCarty.
It's one of two classroom bicycles in the country. There are no sneakers required, and the bike is about more than just cardio.
"Exercise is like miracle grow for your brain," Cain told his students.
"I get a lot smarter because it helps you keep track," McCarty said.
The workout lets students exercise their bodies and minds at the same time.
"It definitely has shown a positive impact in my class," Murray said.
The bicycle uses academic games to work on focus, concentration, visual eye tracking and memorization, all while pedaling. It's level of physical fitness that Cain said he never imagined possible.
"Exercise is really the No. 1 thing you can do to help foster and build your brain and strengthen your brain," he said. "I mean, the brain is no different than a bicep or a tricep."
