As we get older, our brain changes and it takes longer to process information and remember things.
There are lots of ways to help your brain stay sharp. Most things that help your heart also help your brain.
Dr. John Swartzberg, editorial director of the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter says control your blood pressure, maintain a healthy weight and stay active.
"Primarily it's aerobic exercises such as running or cycling."
But anything that keeps your body moving, even ballroom dancing can help.
Diet can also make a difference.
"Large population studies have shown that people who eat a heart healthy diet based on lots of vegetables, fruits and whole grains have better cognition as they age."
Swartzberg says don't waste your money on supplements that promise to help your memory or keep your brain sharp.
"There's absolutely no good evidence that there's any dietary supplement that improves your memory and I would really underline the word no."
While the chances of getting Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia increase with age, the Wellness Letter says these conditions are not a normal part of aging.
