Cigarette boxes now carry gory images such as diseased gums, a dying baby and a brain oozing blood.

No it's not a horror movie, it's real life. And no, I am not responsible, those in authority are.
I am a no smoking campaigner, that is certainly true, my advice is use the patches and several attempts may be necessary, if you follow through from a previous post on the areas of the brain that control this addiction.
Incidentally, now, it is the vast majority of people who choose not to smoke and the unfortunate victims who continue to do it.
Of those who do many are in denial of its effects. But the techniques of some advertsing commercials are questionable.
Commenting in "The New Paper that a public communication campaign should aim to provide adequate information and have 'persuasive appeal'. [says Prof Lee].
Assoc Prof Lee specialises in marketing communication and advertising management.
He said the current anti-smoking commercial 'lacks information and wickedly plays on the audience's sense of fear'.
This was in reference to a commercial showing a woman with decayed teeth and blisters on her lips - [it]could be a model whose face was made-up to drive home the effects of smoking-related cancer.
This was, in fact the case, but to fully comprehend the article you need to use the following link
stop smoking campaigns
No matter how they do it, it is in everyone's interests that smokers stop and that those who are vulnerable e.g. the young and females in particular, never start.
I know that smokers think it is their right but they are fast losing sympathy for their stance.
What do you think?

as an ex-smoker I think that these pictures are good... for some people, especially the younger people. It is an awful addiction to have... you smell, your clothes smell, your breath smells and it is sooooooooo bad for you... but it is also an addiction that is bad for those around you. So I think this shock advertising is a good thing because it is targeted at the younger people... before they actually start... that`s where you need to be in these situations... prevention is definitely better than cure...

Good to hear a bit of passion about this and from an ex-smoker, I agree with everything you say, but to some the message does just not get across.
I had my first and last puff when I was 6, tricked by my brothers[wouldn't you know].... now you can't tell on us.
Two of those brothers, the smokers, are now dead, and the years before death are quite awful for everyone.
Life can be sad really, if only we could rescue people from their own destructive actions.
Sad, sad, sad,....congrats on giving up, I think people listen more to the likes of you, rather than ever listening to me.
Thanks for your well expressed view.

it is difficult to lose loved ones. You are lucky that you quite when you did... even though I gave up a few years ago there are still times when I really crave the odd puff... see if I had never started then i wouldn`t have reason to miss it... get in while they are young I say.
Not sure how many people listen to me... I don`t talk often enough for them to, but only when it counts I guess... that`s why writing is always so good.... the page always has time to listen....
