Photograph by Sandy Felsenthal
Steam and sulfides billow from the James River Corporation pulp and paper mill on the Androscoggin River in Berlin, New Hampshire.
The plant opened in 1853 as a sawmill and quickly grew into one of the foremost chemical pulp mills in the world.
