GDC: Big Brain Academy

Our brains hurt.

OK, not really. But Nintendo found it necessary to tax our brains a little today at their booth at the Game Developers Conference with their forthcoming Wii edition of Big Brain Academy, loosely based around last year's Nintendo DS brain-teasing puzzler. This time around, however, the emphasis seems to be on the party theme. Up to eight players can take part in a game, with the smarter ones apparently getting the benefits. Don't worry, simple-minded gamers, you'll have fun, too.The game we tried out was a two-player versus affair, with the screen split in half with various challenges to complete. A number of certain activities can be selected (from 12 to 64), and then players engage in a race to get them all beat. These activities all use the Nintendo Wii Remote, where players have to maneuver through each stage by making their selections with a virtual hand. One stage involves laying down tracks in a small area so a train can pass through with ease, while another requires hitting numeric floating balloons in order.

The game actually poses quite a mental challenge, with the ability to choose from different categories (the five default ones, plus a new mode called Mix that pleasurably meshes them together). As expected, players get awarded the victory depending how they do, and can even get scores to give them an idea of what to improve on the next time around. Big Brain Academy looks pretty simple, but it's surprisingly fun.

Look for Big Brain Academy sometime this summer

Hi Katyzzz,
More stunning art.
I gave up playing on Nintendo a while ago; most, not all, of the family moved on to Playstation.
But, you make this sound intriguing. Oh Dear...more money and time spent....
It does sound cool.
Oops, got to go....Bob is swearing at his computer, sounds as though it might get violent...maybe I'd better look at ebay & see if any Nintendo machines on sale for recreation....

Theresa,

Easy come, easy go, you sound far more into it that I am or have ever been, so playstation is the way to go?
