The Art of Gainsborough

Known for his famous 'Blue Boy' which I have not shown here for want of a suitably sized image, Thomas Gainsborough [1727-88] had a unique facility in his use of blue.

To compensate for the deficiency of not providing the 'Blue Boy' I am including some of his paintings which show his wonderful achievement in the mixing and use of blue.

Gainsborough was proclaimed a genius of British art and was known for his portraits, landscapes and particular images.

He was born in Suffolk, England. As his art progressed the merchants of the town became his patrons. He was a foundation member of the Royal Academy. Landscapes were his passion and later he painted fancy pictures drawn on pastoral subjects such as the peasants. Sometimes the influence of Rubens can be seen in his work. Reynolds recognised the fluidity of Gainsborough's brushwork.

I hope you enjoy the images I have selected.

Im more of a Salvador Dali, Da Vinci, Van Gogh guy.... My mum had a reproduction of 'Blue Boy' up on the wall at home when I was a kid and I was fascinated with his use of colour.....their is such a rich texture to his work, the colours were vibrantly pleasing to my young mind........as I got older landscapes and real life were replaced with surrealism and the abstract, but I still have a soft spot for Gainsborough's more traditional style

I really like hearing about how kids feel about things, that can be the beginnings for lifelong interests, you've obviously drawn benefit from it.

Thanks for sharing a little of your art history,

Visual Art has played a big part in shaping the manchild I am today...for better or worse...always a sucker for pretty colours

John,

I guess I'll have to join the ranks as womanchild.

I love colour, heaps of it. But that is just a miniscule part of me.

Hi katyzzz
Hope you are well today

Pastoral Landscape is wonderful, the colours of the sky....hhhmmm heavenly!

I agree with JD, Dali is a great - time melting all over the place? Superb!

Love your Signature Tune too, perhaps one day my grandkids will be learning about katyzzz, the great pioneering MS artist and I can reminisce!

Hope you are having some cooler weather down South

Ash,

I'm always as well as I'll ever be.

Still think my stats justify some money....usual gripe.

Yesterday was HOT today is mild, I take the weather as it comes, just adjust accordingly.

How are those parks up there?

Thanks for the call,

katyzzz

Glad to hear you are well katyzzz,
ah i think im going to escape from the heat for a couple of hours this afternoon and take in a movie - 'Stranger than Fiction' looks like a good laugh and the heat is unbearable again today - I think I am still getting used to this muggy climate.
You know I do not think I have been to a park here before...been too busy caught up in the working world before. I am learning to appreciate the beach at the moment though, beautiful above as it is below....may go in search of one over the weekend now....
Have a great day

Ash, Stranger than fiction, that'll be true, so I am not sure how many laughs you'll get.

I'm eyeing off Little Miss Sunshine, Miss Potter and Happy Feet, that's a lot for a non movie person like myself. Usually only go when I am taken.

I loved"Queen" and prior to that Memoirs of a Geisha.

katyzzz...was taken to both....but I'm quite capable of going on my own it's a matter of getting 'roundtuit'. I'm starting to get involved in other things as I anticipated so will be very short of time soon.

katyzzz...I'm being taken to lunches and invited to friends' places at present, quite pleasant really, but that will all end soon as I become more involved elsewhere.

And after all of that...it only starts tomorrow! hhhmmm! Caught 'Deja Vu' instead - very, very interesting movie! I would recommend it, although you would have to be on the mood, it is one of those serious, thinking ones!

Miss Potter, Happy Feet and Memoirs of a Geisha are all brilliant films. I look forward to seeing the others too - much prefer movies to TV - well some of them at least.

Hopefully you will not be too busy to leave some art around the place now and again - we would miss the colourful exhibitions. I know what you mean about time constraints though - I am sitting here with 7 articles due by tomorrow morning and what am I doing? Perusing Orble! Because that will get my work done! Once Uni gets started - very little time for all my questions!

Glad you are getting out and about - hope you have aircon, although you do not seem to mind the heat.
Be well
