Arctic Waters off Norway - a brilliantly chilling photograph!
June 30th 2007 08:15
Svalbard Archipelago, Norway, 1996
Photograph by Flip Nicklin
Researchers motor through glassy Arctic waters off Norway's Svalbard Archipelago. This team is in search of elusive bearded seals, an affectionate and playful seal species that spends nearly all its life either in the water or drifting on Artic ice floes.
At the time of this photo, little was known about bearded seals, due to their forbiddingly frigid habitat and aquatic lifestyle. This and subsequent research missions shed light on this wide-ranging seal's life, include birthing sites, growth rates, diving behavior, and diet.
(Photo shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Bearded Seals: Going With the Floe," March 1990, National Geographic magazine)

I don't recommend swimming when North of Barrow, the water is pretty darn chilly and if you do, dress warmly.
The picture is great, reminds me of many places in AK.
Really Long Link take a cruise through this site, it is a Lodge that I know intimately, the surrounding area is rife with wildlife; moose, bear, wolverine and fishing.

Accommodation looks great, we're getting it all together and we'll pop in to see you.
Please tidy up the table and don't do the cooking.
With our newly acquired fishing skills thanks to James, we'll have fish.
We'll try to get James to come, he's bound to know how to cook our catch.
Thanks for the tip about the clothes, whoever would have thought!
See you just as soon as Orble comes up with the money for our trip.
We're really looking forward to it.

I was lucky enough to see Finland, Sweden and Norway when my husband and I travelled a few years. It was fantasic, it's an area that not as many people seem to go so it had that feeling of being less touched (especially when you compare it to places like Paris-which I also love).
What does a 'death metal' tour consist of? Sounds different....

In death metal tours, travellers make a pilgrimages to see all of the sights and sounds of the death metal scene as Norway is the home of the death metal movement.

In the early 1990s, a distinctively new death metal scene arose, centered primarily around Gothenburg and Stockholm, Sweden, though also incorporating Finnish and Norwegian bands. The Norwegian bands, were influenced strongly by black metal and included keyboards and chaotic riffs.
