Boosting memory late in life.
August 7th 2007 02:05
What have I been telling you all this time.
Exercise, nutrition and brain stimulation all help memory maintenance and well into later life.
From Science Daily comes experimental evidence for (unfortunately) mice but this suggests a likely scenario for the elderly who are more prone to dementia including the main one of Alzheimer's Disease.
Findings showed:
Exercise alone significantly improved the spatial memory of the young.
Both exercise alone and complex enrichment, but not cognitive stimulation alone, significantly improved memory among the middle aged.
For old mice, all enrichments (alone or combined) significantly improved performance.

So get with the strength early in life is what I recommend, don't wait until it is too late to engage in that mental stimulation.
And exercise plus mental challenge in middle age -- when many people start to notice subtle memory changes -- may offer the strongest, most widespread benefits for memory function.
This information is well overdue for at least some of my targeted audience but being on a site not heavily scattered with those who perceive they need this makes it difficult to stick to themes for the elderly alone.
Alzheimer's is destined to assume epidemic proportions unless we do something about it now so do encourage others to practise a good brain health regimen.
Sorry, to have to remind all those who do not wish to face the future with any possibility of negative consequences.
It won't necessarily happen to you.
The link to Science Daily is at the top of my post so all have easy access.
Have an exciting and mentally productive day.
