Alcohol and young brains
March 25th 2007 08:08
It is important for young people and their parents to understand the effects that alcohol consumption can have on young brains.
Teenagers especially need to know what happens to their brains when they drink alcohol.
Half the students in a particular study were 'excessive drinkers', consuming an average of 27 units of alcohol a week - the equivalent of a bottle of spirits. The others drank rarely or not at all.
The subjects were asked how often they had forgotten things they planned or needed to do in the future, such as locking the door or posting a letter.
The heavy drinkers were much more forgetful, and found remembering to carry out immediate simple tasks particularly difficult.
Smoking has also been shown to be detrimental and the full text of the article is shown in the attached link, which acknowledges the authors.
Alcohol can damage younsters' brains
The effects on memory of future planned events was a surprising finding.
These matters cannot be dismissed lightly. Parents carry a large responsibility for education in these areas.
