Why do we watch Sports?
May 27th 2008 13:26
Well, search me, I don't watch them.
But, according to cakerer's weblog, it's not what you think.
He says
watching sports gives us a perfect, safe and secure, black and white, little microcosm of life. Following a player, team or game allows us to experience ups and downs and a whole array of emotions, just like in real life, but we aren’t actually affected.
And unlike life, sports and games are generally fair! There are rules and a crystal clear framework, or paradigm that all the participants and spectators know about. There are never any monkey wrenches thrown into a sports game, like the rules changing mid-game for instance. If rules are broken, the offender is penalized. They don’t frustratingly get away sometimes like in real life.
At the end, there is an unambiguous winner and loser. We get to pretend that the game we’re watching is life, where everything is perfectly fair, everyone plays by the rules and everything makes sense.

He thinks that we are all children at heart and sports allow us to get the acceptance every child needs and to be part of a peer group, carrying advantages of being loved and all the benefits a nice little social group offers
Blame it on our reptilian brain which now forms part of the human emotional brain.
HIgh danger unaccompanied by any real threat it seems and then he goes on to talk about the reptilian brain and war.
Reptilian Brain and War
This is the primitive brain to which many are connected far more closely than out neocortex which allows a more sophisticated way of thinking.
But not for most the use of our higher intelligence over our primitive drives.
I think I'll stick to my neocortex, thankyou, rather than horror stories and sports. The rest of the population may get there in the end.
The primitive brain or lower brain function, deals with fight or flight behavior, hunger, fear, and sex, among other things.
He has much more to say, of course, so I'll put the link at the top, but I doubt he'll get much footage from here, more's the pity.
Well, of course, I've done it again, offended the horror movie watchers and the sports fans, but as I'm female you can't ever really challenge me to a dual, you just call me names, funny about that.
Would you like to know more about your neocortex so you can rise above all that?
Oh, well, yes, I guess not, which is round about what I expected, so I don't know where that leaves my source, but he's much more sympathetic than I am.
I guess my reptilian brain just drives me to war, eh?
