Percussion group heads for world competition

SUSAN SILVERS

"The Science of Music," a six and one-half minute program that examines the relationship between music and the brain.

For most of two months, the group is practicing from 16 to 20 hours weekly — including six hours on Saturdays — and giving up other free time for competition as well.

But for the nearly 30 students in the group, who besides a moving "battery" of drummers and cymbalists comprise a stationary group on keyboards and several other instruments, it's certainly worth it.

"It was the best decision I ever made," Nicole Adams, a senior who plans to attend the University of North Carolina to study education, said of her participation in the ensemble. "It taught me more patience and how much practice really does help," she said.

"We're playing very intricate, very difficult music that you don't hear in a normal concert," he said. Besides, he said, the program gives percussionists a chance to shine on their own. "They love to perform," he said.

But with this, "you really have to express the type of music you're playing," with facial movement, such as an angry look, for a particularly angry segment of the music, he said.

"It's a lot of thinking to do at once. Making sure you're in step. Making sure you're in form. Making sure you're playing the right music," he added.

So they are even doing it with brass now, let alone the class.

The science of music, examining the relationship between music and the brain, is spreading beyond the 'Mozart" effect so it seems.

For those who question it, just try it, that'll solve it for you.
